you know, i used to work without the audience in mind. i'm going to try to work from that place again. i think the expectations coming back at me (or perceived expectations, anyway) have been interfering with my signal to the point of almost self destruction. i don't think there is anything worse than not being satisfied with what is coming out (creatively) and working to no avail (while at the same time believing that my survival depends on it, which feeds the interference backloop creating a totally unnecessary impasse). it's like that dream of being attacked and trying to scream but not a peep comes out. no voice equals no expression equals no help equals (invariably) death or at least torture, loss, and destruction to some degree. but i see how at the deepest modes of operation this fear of death disguises itself in tricky (seemingly innocent) mental arrangements that inevitably produce snarled networks of nested misperceptions to such a degree that it seems impossible to disentangle oneself, let alone communicate a truth in pure form...! i can sort of see my mistakes (in thinking) generating here pretty clearly, which means i must be hovering outside of that story, which means i must be making some fucking incredible progress. that's all.

The one difficulty with this (Holy Map) project has been finding a way to talk about what I'm attempting to achieve here without sounding too over the top. These pictures are created as tools of transformation. They are the beginning of a story, a new kind of Fairytale meant to create a conscious dialogue between one's inner and outer world. What I'm building here is a visual narrative that acts as a navigational system. Each painting contains a hidden map that one must 'feel' to perceive. The directions are hidden in the underpaintings. The parameters and the passage are constantly changing but the nucleus, the heart of the story (and the destination) remain fixed.
These paintings are ever-shifting in a way that one would normally assume an object could not be. Everything is.

Superfixer and the Meaning of the Strawberry

According to the Holy Map Lexicon, the strawberry is a symbol of purification and regeneration. Superfixer is one of the first sound experiments I created last year. I made the entire thing using only the internal microphone on my laptop (while in my pajamas) in a magical cottage garden in Los Angeles. (I also made the Cottage Song that week, which I'll post eventually).
The lyrics came to me when I was in my bedroom in Denmark one morning a few months before I began experimenting with recording and recycling sounds with the internal mic. I wanted to create a lyrical code that would rewire my brain. Superfixer is coded to fix the physical body. Some people remark that these sound experiments are too repetitive, but they are meant to be. They are creating new neurological pathways and hopefully expanding neurological thresholds (or something).

how long does it take you to make a painting?
al: sometimes one month, sometimes 5 years. making this work is a labryinth. every stroke is a potential way out, or (mostly) in...every choice is a risk. i work on an entire body of work at the same time in order to create a certain kind of painting ecology where the network informs and references itself. this creates a really interesting dialog between each painting and a really extraordinary collective feedback loop. i've usually got about 40 paintings going at the same time. they sort of reincarnate together. every layer is a new incarnation, usually with a new name. if you look at the side of that canvas you can see the various incarnations that the painting has gone through by the series of names. (well, some of them have been scratched out or totally disappeared by now because they are usually written in pencil or china marker. the last incarnation (or final name) is usually in black with white writing.) i've never started a painting and ended a painting with the same incarnation. these things have a pretty intense interior life. i'm trying to get better at documenting the underpaintings but for the most part, i like to keep the programming kind of hidden. (linquist considers the layered underpaintings the 'programming' of the work.)

for me, painting can only be an exploration. if i am fixated on the end result, i lose my sense of play and the strokes lose their charge. i really have to work from a holographic place that feels very much like the world of a child. in that world, a picture is generated by the magic that wonder and curiosity provoke. the concept or narrative becomes the end result of the inquiry, not the other way around. you know? in this way, the process of making something doesn't just inform the work; it becomes the work. being able to remember that world as an adult has been my primary focus, really. this requires (umm) a reconnection with the true heart of creation. does that sound trite? yeah, it is so difficult for me to talk about how the heart informs my work. i wish there was a less loaded word for heart. so much of my work is focused on creating a new lexicon to build these ideas...
these things (paintings) make themselves; i just need to stay patient and focused and let them happen. it is seriously tricky.
